What Is Vestibular Rehabilitation?
Vestibular Rehabilitation is a specialized physiotherapy program designed for people experiencing dizziness, vertigo, imbalance and movement-related instability. It uses targeted exercises and condition-specific techniques to retrain balance, improve visual stability and restore confidence during everyday movement.
Vestibular Rehabilitation focuses on how the inner ear, vision and nervous system work together to maintain balance and orientation.
Treatment can include gaze-stabilization exercises, balance retraining, habituation exercises, walking practice, sensory integration and progressive head-and-body movement exercises. For confirmed BPPV, a canal-specific repositioning manoeuvre may be the appropriate treatment rather than a general exercise programme.
Benefits of Vestibular Rehabilitation
Potential benefits within an individual rehabilitation plan.
Dizziness Control
Targeted vestibular exercises help the brain adapt to altered balance signals, reducing dizziness during head movement, position changes and visually demanding everyday situations.
Balance Retraining
Progressive balance exercises challenge the vestibular, visual and sensory systems together, helping patients regain greater stability during standing, walking and changing direction.
Gaze Stability
Specialized exercises retrain the vestibulo-ocular reflex, helping patients keep their vision clearer and steadier while the head is moving.
Walking Confidence
Gait and dynamic balance training helps reduce unsteadiness during walking, turning, stair use and community mobility, improving confidence in everyday movement.
Activity Restoration
Gradual exposure to previously provocative movements helps patients tolerate daily activities, work, exercise and recreational movement with greater confidence and less symptom limitation.
Who Can Benefit?
Vestibular Rehabilitation can benefit selected patients with:
- Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
- Unilateral or bilateral vestibular hypofunction
- Vestibular neuritis
- Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD)
- Vestibular migraine
- Persistent dizziness and imbalance
- Motion sensitivity
- Balance and walking difficulties
- Selected post-concussion dizziness
- Age-related balance problems
