What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture involves the precise insertion of very fine, sterile needles at selected points on the body. The needles can be gently manipulated, and selected approaches can also use mild electrical stimulation known as electroacupuncture.
Acupuncture may influence nervous-system activity and local tissue responses involved in pain. Its mechanisms are not fully understood, and the benefits vary with the condition and the treatment used for comparison.
Within musculoskeletal rehabilitation, acupuncture can be considered as part of an individual treatment plan. It may be combined with exercise, strengthening and mobility work to support comfort and everyday activity.
Benefits of Acupuncture
Potential benefits within an individual rehabilitation plan.
Relieves Pain
Supports pain reduction in selected neck, back, joint and musculoskeletal conditions.
Improves Movement & Function
Reduced pain and sensitivity help support more comfortable movement and everyday activity.
Supports Chronic Pain Management
Provides a drug-free treatment option within an individualized approach to persistent musculoskeletal pain.
Complements Rehabilitation
Can accompany mobility, strengthening and exercise-based physiotherapy. WHO conditionally supports needling therapies as one part of care for chronic primary low-back pain, based on low-certainty evidence; this is not a recommendation for every back-pain presentation.
Who Can Benefit?
Acupuncture can be considered for selected patients experiencing:
- Chronic lower-back pain
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Knee osteoarthritis-related pain
- Myofascial and muscular pain
- Tension-type headaches and migraine
