What Is Concussion Rehabilitation?
Concussion Rehabilitation is a structured physiotherapy programme for selected symptoms after a medically assessed concussion, including dizziness, headache associated with neck problems, balance difficulty and exercise intolerance. It forms part of a broader recovery plan rather than replacing the initial medical assessment.
Concussion Rehabilitation focuses on the specific physical systems affected after a concussion, rather than using a one-size-fits-all recovery plan.
Depending on the patient’s symptoms, rehabilitation may include vestibular exercises, balance training, gaze-stabilization work, cervical rehabilitation, graded aerobic exercise and progressive return-to-activity training.
Benefits of Concussion Rehabilitation
Potential benefits within an individual rehabilitation plan.
Symptom Control
Targeted rehabilitation can help reduce dizziness, headaches, motion sensitivity and other symptoms by addressing the physical systems contributing to ongoing post-concussion problems.
Balance Recovery
Vestibular and balance exercises help improve stability, head-movement tolerance and confidence during walking, turning and other everyday activities.
Exercise Tolerance
Graded aerobic exercise helps rebuild tolerance to physical activity in a controlled way, allowing patients to progress without repeatedly triggering significant symptoms.
Visual Stability
Assessment-led gaze and visual-motion work may help selected vestibular or visual-motion symptoms. Persistent reading or vision difficulties can also need assessment by an appropriately qualified eye-care or medical professional.
Return-to-Activity
A graded plan supports return to work, school, exercise and sport. Return to contact or collision sport requires appropriate medical clearance and a supervised progression; a physiotherapy session alone does not establish readiness.
Who Can Benefit?
Concussion Rehabilitation can benefit selected patients with:
- Persistent dizziness or imbalance
- Headache associated with neck dysfunction
- Motion or visual sensitivity
- Reduced exercise tolerance
- Difficulty returning to sport
- Balance or coordination problems
- Vestibular symptoms after concussion
- Persistent symptoms beyond the early recovery period
- Difficulty tolerating school, work or daily activity
- Athletes progressing through return-to-play rehabilitation
