ACL Surgery First Month Precautions

Why Protect Your ACL Graft in the First Month

First month after ACL surgery is critical. Graft is weak and needs time to heal. Sudden moves can damage it. Twisting or pivoting stresses the knee most. Protection aids recovery.

In Jaipur, sports injuries from cricket, football or gym are common. At Trivayu Physio Center in Vaishali Nagar, we treat patients after ACL reconstruction. Early care sets base for return to activities. Physiotherapist checks stability, swelling and range. They adjust brace and teach safe moves.

Graft vulnerability peaks early. Without protection, re-injury risks rise. Focus on rest, controlled moves and clinic guidance. Do home checks on swelling and pain. Report changes at sessions. Looking for a Physiotherapist in Jaipur? Our team in Vaishali Nagar, Jaipur can assess you in person.

Key Do’s for ACL Recovery First Month

Follow these daily. Physiotherapist shows hands-on.

  • Use brace as advised. Limits bends and twists. Lock straight for standing or walking. Unlock only for approved exercises.
  • Ice knee 15-20 minutes every few hours. Wrap in cloth. Do after activity.
  • Elevate leg above heart when resting. Lie back, pillows under heel, knee straight. 2-3 sessions daily, 20 minutes each.
  • Do ankle pumps and straight leg raises. Ankle pumps: point and flex foot 10 times hourly. Straight leg raises: tighten thigh, lift 6 inches, hold 5 seconds, 10 repeats twice daily. Keeps blood flowing without strain.
  • Follow surgeon’s weight-bearing rules. Start with crutches, then partial weight. Touch toe to ground first, then heel. Use two crutches until told to drop one.
  • Practice quad sets. Knee straight, push down into bed or towel roll. Hold 5-10 seconds, 10 times, 3 sets daily. Builds muscle without bending knee.

Clinic electrotherapy controls pain and swelling. 2-3 sessions weekly, 30-45 minutes, with home plan review.

Essential Don’ts: Avoiding Twists and Risks Post-ACL Surgery

Avoid moves that harm graft. Errors delay recovery. Physiotherapists spot twist habits.

  • No knee twisting. Turning while planting foot risks tear. Pivot on good leg, keep surgery knee forward.
  • Avoid pivoting or sudden stops. Walk straight lines only.
  • Skip deep squats or lunges. No bending past 90 degrees.
  • Do not drive until cleared. Test brake response with physio.
  • No stairs without rail. Up: sideways, good leg first. Down: surgery leg first, good leg pulls.
  • Avoid uneven ground. Stick to smooth floors. No cycling or kneeling.
  • Do not sleep with knee bent. Use pillows to keep straight.

Twists happen getting out of bed or in shower. Scoot to bed edge, swing legs together, stand using arms. In shower, use grab bar, feet flat. Clinic manual therapy, Class IV laser therapy and TECAR therapy ease tension. Sessions include gait training with crutches on even surface.

Role of Physiotherapy in Early ACL Protection

Physiotherapy starts day 1-3 if swelling allows. Protects graft while building strength. First visit: assess pain, measure bend, check brace.

Team at Trivayu Physio Center handles post-surgery rehab. Dr. Jyoti Choudhary, 17+ years in sports and orthopaedics, leads. Works with Rajasthan Women’s Cricket Team. Dr. Hritika Choudhary excels in electrotherapy and post-op rehab. Read more about our Orthopaedic Physiotherapy.

We use Robotic Spinal Decompression if needed, dry needling, clinical Pilates. Dry needling targets tight calf or hamstring. Pilates uses reformer for supported leg slides, no twist.

Sessions: 10 minutes electrotherapy (TECAR or laser), 20 minutes manual therapy (massage, joint glides), 10 minutes exercises. Home visits cover Jaipur, including Vaishali Nagar and Vidyadhar Nagar. Online consultations guide. Home plan: photo knee daily, track walk distance. You may also find Rotator Cuff Exercises Jaipur Post Injury useful.

ACL Reconstruction Recovery: Building Safe Habits

First month focuses on graft protection and mobility. Physiotherapist tracks weekly. If swelling drops, add heel slides: slide heel toward butt 6 inches, 10 times.

Limit side stress. Standing from chair: push with arms, feet parallel. Sitting: log roll to side first. No heat first 48 hours. Watch for redness or heat; call surgeon. Progress when pain-free.

Safe Activities Post ACL and Twisting Movements

Safe first month: short flat walks with crutches, seated upper body work, ankle exercises. 5-10 minute walks twice daily, increase as cleared.

No twisting. Physio tests pivot later. Early: “clock turns” facing forward only.

When to see a doctor, not a physiotherapist

Physiotherapy is not the right first step for everything. Seek medical assessment promptly if any of the following apply to you:

  • Pain following a significant fall, road accident or other major injury
  • Fever, chills or feeling generally unwell alongside the pain
  • Weakness that is getting worse, or numbness that is spreading

If you lose control of your bladder or bowels, develop numbness around the groin, or have chest pain or breathlessness, treat it as an emergency and go to hospital.

Safety limits and when this does not apply

  • Any exercise that sharply increases your pain, or leaves it raised the following morning, is too much for now.
  • Electrotherapy and laser therapy have their own restrictions, including pacemakers, pregnancy and treatment over a known tumour. Your physiotherapist screens for these before use.
