Knee Replacement Infection Signs in Jaipur: When to Call Physio

After knee replacement surgery, watch your wound closely. Infections can slow recovery. Early signs include redness around the incision, swelling, warmth, pus, fever or worsening pain. Spot these and act fast.

Physiotherapists at Trivayu Physio Center in Jaipur help with post-op rehab. They check wounds but do not diagnose. See a doctor for medical concerns. This guide covers signs of knee surgery wound infection, when to call physio early, and monitoring steps.

Recovery varies. Trivayu offers post-surgery rehab at Vaishali Nagar and Vidyadhar Nagar.

Understanding Knee Replacement Wound Infections

Wound infections occur when germs enter the surgical site. Causes include bacteria from skin or poor hygiene. They range from superficial (skin layers) to deep (muscle or joint). Both need prompt attention. Early detection aids management. Contact your surgeon if you suspect infection. Physiotherapists cannot diagnose. Looking for a Physiotherapy Near Me? Our team in Vaishali Nagar, Jaipur can assess you in person.

Watch for wound changes daily in good light. Check morning and evening. Take photos to track. Seek medical help for urgent signs.

Key Signs of Infection After Knee Replacement

Look for these changes. Track size, spread and feel in a notebook:

  • Redness around incision: Redness spreads beyond the cut or feels hot. Mild redness near stitches can be normal. Angry red edges or streaks need note.
  • Swelling after knee surgery: Puffs up and stays after rest or elevation. Stays indented on press.
  • Warmth at surgical site: Warmer than nearby skin or other knee. Compare with hand back.
  • Pus from wound: Thick yellow or green fluid, may smell. Clear fluid is normal; colour change warns.
  • Fever after knee replacement: Above normal, with chills or sweats. Check twice daily.
  • Pain increasing post surgery: Grows despite rest and meds. Sharp or throbbing.

Mild signs may need watching. Stronger ones demand urgent care. Track with dates and times.

Early Infection Detection and Post-Op Wound Monitoring

Check wound daily without removing dressing unless told. Note changes in size, colour or ooze. Feel for heat or tenderness lightly.

At home: Elevate leg 30 minutes, three times daily. Note if swelling drops. Walk short distances as guided; watch pain. Use mirror or family help for back of knee. Read more about our Orthopaedic Physiotherapy.

If two or more signs together, act. Redness with warmth or pus with fever means see doctor. Early catch stops spread.

Physios teach spotting changes during rehab.

How a Physiotherapist Approaches Knee Replacement Complications

Physios tailor rehab. For mild swelling or warmth, modify: seated leg lifts, no deep squats.

For increasing pain, ice 15 minutes before stretch. Gentle mobilisations.

Scar massage once healed: Light circles 5 minutes daily.

For redness, advise doctor, pause contact exercises, do upper body.

Progress: Week 1 bed exercises like ankle pumps. Week 2 chair sits. Match tolerance.

Preventing Complications in Knee Replacement Recovery

Follow these daily:

  1. Wound care: Keep dressing dry and clean. Change as surgeon advises. Pat dry after shower.
  2. Hygiene: Wash hands 20 seconds before touch. No baths or pools until cleared.
  3. Activity: Rest but move as guided. Walker or crutches. No lifting over 2 kg. Knee lower than hip when sitting.
  4. Elevate: Above heart 3-4 times daily, 20 minutes. Heel off bed.
  5. Breathing: Deep breaths hourly. Cough gently.

Physio corrects posture. Exercises: heel slides, quad sets, straight leg raises. 10 reps, 3 sets daily. Stop if pain rises.

When to see a doctor, not a physiotherapist

Physiotherapy is not the right first step for everything. Seek medical assessment promptly if any of the following apply to you:

  • Pain following a significant fall, road accident or other major injury
  • Fever, chills or feeling generally unwell alongside the pain
  • Weakness that is getting worse, or numbness that is spreading

If you lose control of your bladder or bowels, develop numbness around the groin, or have chest pain or breathlessness, treat it as an emergency and go to hospital.

Safety limits and when this does not apply

  • Any exercise that sharply increases your pain, or leaves it raised the following morning, is too much for now.
  • Electrotherapy and laser therapy have their own restrictions, including pacemakers, pregnancy and treatment over a known tumour. Your physiotherapist screens for these before use.
  • This article is general information. It is not an assessment of your problem, and it cannot account for your medical history, medication or imaging.
